The Monmouth County SPCA at 260 Wall St. in Eatontown is currently undergoing a massive renovation, during which time, the animals, staff, and volunteers are making difficult, but necessary sacrifices, waiting for the vast improvement that will come at completion of the project.

The SPCA directors, however, did not want to lose operation of their Thrift Shop during the entire time, since it is a major source of revenue for the non-profit organization.

RBA Homes of Red Bank came up with an innovative plan to help get the shop back in business as quickly as possible.

Plans for the new Thrift Shop building included a large open space first floor for the shop with the caretaker’s apartment upstairs. RBA proposed using a “hybrid” building approach that called for framing the first floor traditionally and using modular units for the second-floor residence.

This would save the organization time and money, while catering to the unique open-space needs of the shop downstairs. After the first floor framing was complete, two modular units were built at the factory in Pennsylvania and shipped to Eatontown.

They arrived on May 12 and on May 13 were installed. At 7:30 in the morning, the first floor framing stood stark against the rising sun. By 9:30am, staff members were walking through the upstairs, commenting “It looked as if they were almost ready to unpack!”

Local architect Bob DeSantis of Kaplan Gaunt DeSantis Architects in Red Bank, designed the Thrift Shop and collaborated with RBA on the modular home above. The SPCA chose RBA Homes to construct the entire building from the lower-level framing to the upper-level modular home for the care-taker.

The Thrift Shop expects to be back up and running in August, well before the renovation on the main building is complete.

Central Jersey’s leading modular home builder, RBA Homes has built hundreds of homes since 1986 using modular technology. RBA believes that modular construction can provide a quality built product at an affordable price, in less time than a traditionally built home. The company can also offer the option to build a custom home using traditional on-site framing.
